LABORATORY FOR NANOSCALE
& QUANTUM PHOTONICS
We investigate nanoscale processes which are critical to light-based technologies. Knowledge of these processes is vital in many sectors: energy-conversion, optoelectronics and quantum computing. To probe these dynamical processes, occurring at ultrafast speeds, we combine our expertise in both high-resolution nanofabrication and ultrafast laser optics to capture real-time information about the motion of atoms and electrons, and the bonds that hold them.
Collecting information about the dynamics of the nanostructured systems, which last for few fleeting picoseconds (1 ps = one millionth of one millionth of a second), provides physical insights about how they react to different stimuli and to the environment. This knowledge allows us to understand bottleneck mechanisms. Ultimately, our goal is to tailor spatially, temporally and spectrally optoelectronic nanomaterials to enhance the performance of emerging technologies.
